Introduction We are all drinking coffee in the morning. How often do we pay attention to it? .Importance of gratitude .Local and global We are always part of many and complex systems. We are supported by many and complex systems. Here we are taking one example to illustrate that. Intention The intention of this task is to choose one simple object, and use it to give attention to and appreciate the systems that support our lives.
Desired outcome Increased ability and curiosity to 'see systems' and how we participate in them, everywhere. Wellbeing through gratitude and connection.
How:
1
Introduction Set a cup of coffee in the middle of the room. Introduce the activity. How did this coffee get here? Who and what has made it possible?
2
Talk in pairs and take note of everything you come up with. (5min)
3
Groups of four (10min) What structures and systems need to be in place for the coffee to be here? Take notes.
4
Sharing in plenary to gather all the insights. (One person can note down everything that is mentioned, with words or drawing) If needed, ask guiding questions to get more insights. (options: people, political systems, customs, materials, nature, climate, history, economic structures, beliefs and values, etc.) Include questions about the waste that is created in this process (e.g. used coffee grounds)
5
Debrief the task How was it to do the task? What if every time you drink coffee you could feel grateful for all of this?
